The name Gogi (GO-ghee) is a made-up word from my childhood that means “motorcycle”. The inspiration behind the project is that the music, rather than fitting into one genre or another, would be based on what got my attention, musically, since I was a child.
This record has a few complementary inspirations. I wanted to make a record in which all of my musical influences, especially some earlier ones, could fit together cohesively. Hopefully I have done that.
When I was a child, the glint of sunlight when I squinted my eyes always inspired my imagination. That strange gleam in the corner of my eye, at just the right angle, always had me wondering about things we could not see. I still wonder.
Lastly, trying to project positive energy into the world is one of the goals of this record, the first of mine under the name Gogi. Thus the art, sounds, production etc are all informed by reaching back across life, taking all those facets and inspirations, and then using them to launch a new project that is more indicative of who I am as a person than other material I have written.
When I was an infant I was burned on a motorcycle engine. Although I do not remember the incident, it had an impact on my life and the kind of music I would produce. I approached Gogi with the goal of making people feel like everything is going to be okay. In doing so I had an amazing and rewarding time producing the material. In that sense I have taken something traumatic and turned it into something cathartic, for myself and also, hopefully, for the listener.
Sunshine Girl is about my cat, your cat, and all the other catty cats out there in catworld.
